Thornaby FC is proud to have officially unveiled its new, forward-thinking club crest to supporters for the very first time during an end-of-season awards night at Teesdale Park.
As the club continues to grow and evolve, it became vital that the symbols representing Thornaby FC evolved as well.
While the previous badge served the club through many proud chapters, the decision to update the crest was not taken lightly.
Thornaby recognised the need to connect with a wider audience across the modern digital world, while simultaneously carrying its rich past forward with pride.
Living up to the town’s historic motto of ‘Always Advancing’, the club launched an extensive consultation process, inviting supporters, players, volunteers and partners to share their thoughts on what should be kept and what needed a fresh perspective.
The resounding feedback from the community has shaped the striking new design.
Staying true to the club’s heritage, the new badge retains Thornaby’s traditional blue colours.
And, following the public feedback, an overwhelming 90 per cent of fans opted to have the club’s founding year, ‘est. 2000’, proudly integrated into the final design.
The most significant change sees the traditional town crest replaced at the heart of the badge by the iconic Five Lamps – a historic landmark and a true symbol of the Thornaby community.
Originally commissioned by local Justices of the Peace in 1874 at the intersection of Mandale Road and George Street, the ornate, cast-iron electric lamp post featured a drinking fountain and quickly became a bustling focal point for public speaking and debate.
The current structure, a replica famously erected in 1983 by Head Wrightson apprentices, was renovated and moved to its current, highly accessible location on Mitchell Avenue.
Acting as a gateway to the town, the Five Lamps bears the coats of arms for both Stockton-on-Tees and Thornaby. Now, it will act as the beating heart of the football club’s identity.
89% of fans believed local iconography should be the centre of the club’s revised crest. Of those fans, 81% believed the Five Lamps as the perfect symbol for the crest.
Ryan McKnight, Thornaby FC’s chief operations officer, said: “We are delighted to share our new crest, ahead of the 2026/27 season.
“Inspired by local iconography, specifically the proud integration of the historic Five Lamps at the centre of the design, it is the result of an extensive consultation process with our loyal supporters and the wider community.
“The updated badge has been crafted to work seamlessly across the modern digital landscape, representing the next step in the club’s identity as we move into a new era.
“We wanted to make sure we respected our history and the badge that has stood through both triumphs and testing times, and we believe this new emblem perfectly captures the tradition, community, and ambition of Thornaby-on-Tees.”
The new crest will take pride of place on all Thornaby FC playing strips, merchandise and digital platforms from the start of the 2026/27 campaign, marking the dawn of an exciting new chapter at Teesdale Park.
